Since 1982, the Memorial Salute of Flags, a nonprofit organization, has collected these flags from families and fly them on Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Veterans Day in the downtown area of Cedar Rapids. Each flag is identified with the veteran's name and safeguarded by the committee.

All veterans’ organizations in Linn County have endorsed this project as a great tribute to their comrades. We encourage you to donate your flag so that it too can fly proudly, as it was meant to, in a tribute to all veterans.

In 1982, President Ronald Reagan honored this flag project by writing, “The Memorial Salute of Flags honors the memories of our veterans, whose sacrifices have helped preserve the freedom and way of life we Americans enjoy so much”.
